The Isle of Tiree lies off Scotland’s West Coast about an hour from Glasgow by plane and about four hours from the Mainland Ferry Terminal of Oban. It is approximately 11 miles long, five miles wide at its widest point and less than a mile wide at its narrowest point. Its shape is like that of a lamb chop.

It is important to remember that Tiree is a working island and neither a museum or a playground. It is a crofting community with many families involved in the fishing industry, The population is close to 750 people.

The number of people on the island greatly increases during the summer months with many people choosing Tiree as their holiday destination. The waters around the island make it popular with those who enjoy water sports.

The island has a proud Gaelic tradition and musical heritage. The school has two streams, Gaelic and English with the use of the language encouraged. Many of the Scottish traditional bands have at least one member from the island. Bands include: Skerryvore, Skipinish, Gunna Sound, Cornaig Ceilidh Band, just to mention a few. There is no shortage of ‘box’ players.

During the summer months Tiree Baptist Church normally meets in An Talla, the island’s community hall, at Crossapol. In the winter the church generally meets in their own premises at Baugh. The Sunday Gathering is at 11:00am. For further information telephone the church secretary on ‭01879 220633‬.

Sitting out in the Atlantic Tiree never has it too cold or too hot. It is not to say there is never snow or frost, but they are rare and rarely last for long. As for ‘midges’ – they do occur but not to the same degree as on theWest Coast Mainland. It can be a touch too breezy for them.
